A circular form for this product seemed interesting and fitting for the concept, creating a 360 degree spread of the objects it will ultimately hold. The concept of “sandwiching” multiple pieces of varying thicknesses created a functionality concern that could only be solved by exploring fastener hardware options. While the initial concept was quickly prototyped with two large magnets, this solution was known to be non-viable for mass market manufacturing due to rising material costs and two key problems: The assembly needed to be separated for functional use, not allowing the user to hold multiple objects, as well as had a limited thickness capacity. Other expandable options were prototyped including pronged elastic, threaded inserts and also a bolt with spring. It became clear that, from a manufacturing standpoint, the product needed to rely on smart, efficient CNC work to allow assembly labor time for using a hanger bolt and spring combination to make the product function as best as possible.
